Some time ago, I was interviewed by a local newspaper. One of the questions
they asked me was:
“What is the secret behind making a good wine?”
I
quickly answered without thinking twice about it:
“The people”.
The journalist could not disguise his surprise. He had imagined a thousand
possible answers. All of them very distant from mine. Those two words,
so simple and obvious for me, changed the expression on his face. As
he later confessed, he was expecting something to do with grapes, good
harvests, good technology, a good oenologist, experience…
However, for me,
that is the key. I have always had a clear notion that a good product
is the fruit of shared responsibility, coordinated team
work, and the contribution
and commitment of each of the team members. From the
person in charge of ensuring that the facilities remain impeccable, to
those who take care of the vines and their fruit, employ their knowledge
and enthusiasm to change the grapes into wine, bottle it, sell it, administer
and manage the business.
Quality is like a plant that grows from a seed. A seed that is inside
each of the individuals that comprise the team. People who are aware of
their responsibility, looking after every detail, until they manage to
get THE WHOLE TO BE MORE THAN THE SUM OF THE PARTS.
